She has vintage Priscilla Presley hair, and her clothing style is 52 years old, but “Elvis Barbie” is brand new.
With her familiar posable body, Barbie is decked out in the famous gold lamé suit designed for Elvis by Hollywood tailor Nudie Cohn. It became one of Elvis’ signature looks and the cover of his 1959 album 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong.
Elvis later declared the suit was too hot to wear on stage and wore the jacket with black slacks.
The Barbie version of Elvis is being released in early July, and Graceland has ordered 250 of the $34.95 collector dolls from toy maker Mattel. “We anticipate they will be here by the weekend, and we will immediately post on elvis.com when the shipment arrives,” said Graceland spokeswoman Alicia Dean.
Graceland marketing vice president Scott Williams said Elvis paid $10,000 for the gold lamé suit. The tailor, flamboyant Russian immigrant Nudie Cohn, also was widely known as tailor to singer Hank Williams, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and other country and western stars. Later clients included Cher and Elton John. The clothes often involved chain-stitch embroidery, and, like the gold lamé suit, rhinestones.

Martha & Joe

Everyone knows Joe Esposito as Elvis Presley’s personal friend, best man at his wedding, and road manager. Joe is also a beloved member of our Elvis family. Joe’s darling wife Martha has battled cancer. And unfortunately, it has returned. Anyone who has undergone Cancer treatments or watched a love one fight cancer knows how costly treatment can be. And much of Martha’s very expensive treatments are not covered by insurance. We know what a kind, generous man Elvis Presley was, and if he was still with us, he would do anything to help Joe & Martha. So my friends, I am asking you to help in any way possible, either through prayer and positive thoughts for Joe & Martha. Or if you can, please make a donation. We have listed the link for donations below.
The Talbot Family Foundation is accepting TAX DEDUCTIBLE donations for Martha’s treatments. Joe is also planning an event in Vegas for Martha’s treatment.

Having watched my own mother battle cancer twice, this is a special cause close to my heart. Martha is a very strong and determined lady much like my own mother but she needs our help. So let’s come together as an Elvis family and help, much like Elvis himself would do without question.

From Martha:

Dear Friends and Family,
What an ordeal this is. As you must know by now…UCLA diagnosed me with a terrible disease…neoplastic meningitis which is like cancer having meningitis. It is in my inner auditory canals so I am totally deaf which makes it impossible to talk to doctors on the phone or drive a car. They also found two lesions in my lower lumbar spinal cord. This is not a good diagnosis. I am starting 10 whole brain radiations which will probably cause short term memory deficits they said. I was supposed to have an Ommaya reservoir  placed in my brain for infusions of a chemo called depocyte but turned in down. ThenI went to New York to see a Dr. Raymond Chang of the Meridien Group. He gave me an infusion, a shot, and hundreds of pills to take. Very expensive and not covered by insurance. We’ll see how that goes first. I am supposed to go back to NY an about 3 weeks for more of the same. It has worked on some of his patients that were in worse shape than me he said. This is just horrific. I’ve had many panic attacks throughout all of this, but I am coping the best I can. I am taking Lexapro for depression for the last 10 days.
I am going to see about setting up some kind of fundraiser to try to cover these expenses. I wish there were some other way to get rid of this disease, the option of the chemo reservoir is my last resort. They also recommended later to have whole spine radiation which would destroy some of my bone marrow. All these options, if I can get through them leave me incapacitated in some way.
Meanwhile, I am hanging in there. My son, AJ, is living with us during this time thank God. He has been such a help. Joe is travelling part of this month trying to earn some money. Anyone who wants to visit…come on. Anyone who wants to help out in any way, be it finances, transportation, airline tickets, clinical trials, great hospital and doctors and how to get me to them, pull or power to get things done quickly…thank you ahead of time.
I have the will to survive…I have a lot to live for still and I want to do and see so many things yet.
All my love,
Martha

Jim E Curtin

The name Jim E Curtin is well known in the Elvis world not only as a super collector but also as an entertainer and author. Jim is said to have known Elvis Presley from 1970 to 1977. He began his tribute show to Elvis in 1975. Elvis is said to have given him a jumpsuit.

Jim shakes Elvis Presley’s hand

In the early ‘70s, after spending his adolescence fanatically collecting virtually every Presley recording, foreign and domestic, Curtin, by then in his early 20s, decided he had to meet Elvis. He knew he needed a special plan, so he saved every cent he could from his job in a grocery store, and ordered a $2,000 custom-made Gibson guitar, which had “Elvis Presley” and two crowns inscribed on the fretboard.
Then, in September 1974, he bought two plane tickets to Las Vegas, one for him and one for the guitar. After spending a week in the Las Vegas and attending all of Presley’s shows at the Hilton (often paying the maitre d’ up to $200 for a front row seat), Curtin managed to track down Vernon Presley, Elvis’s father, in one of the casinos and begged him for an opportunity to meet the King.
Miraculously, at 5 a.m. one morning Curtin was summoned by the elder Presley to Elvis’s hotel room. There Curtin met Presley, reverentially told him how much he loved him, and presented him with the guitar. He also had several photos taken with Elvis, but he later found that none of the shots would develop because of a camera malfunction. So he “had no proof of that meeting,” says Curtin. “To this day I lose sleep over it.”
At the King’s concert the next night, however, Presley publicly thanked Curtin for the guitar. The Vegas trip cost Curtin $5,000, but the black $2,000 Gibson acoustic now hangs in the Trophy Room at Graceland.
A year after that near-religious experience, Curtin went back to Vegas with more expensive gifts in an effort to finagle another meeting and more pictures with Elvis, but by then Elvis had gained a lot of weight and would not allow any picture taking. As a consolation, Presley gave Curtin one of his ostentatious jumpsuits, and to this day it remains one of Curtin’s most prized possessions. “I’m thinking about getting buried in it,” he says without a hint of irony.
Curtin later followed several Presley tours around the country and saw the King perform a total of 51 times. He also met Elvis three more times and shook his hand 33 times (“32 times with the right, once with the left”).
During the mid-70’s, before the term “Elvis impersonator” even existed, Curtin was dressing like Elvis, and in 1976 he began singing Elvis songs with a band at various Philadelphia area clubs. When Presley died a couple years later, the demand for Elvis impersonators skyrocketed, and Curtin was performing his tribute all over the mid-Atlantic region. In his heyday in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Curtin had a dozen different fan clubs.
Over the years, Jim built up his Elvis Empire of Elvis memorabilia including over 25,000 photos of Elvis ,over 10,000 collectibles of Elvis,  over 5,000 records of Elvis from all over the world ,10,000 feet of unlreased concert footage on Super 8mm film ,3 original stage-worn jumpsuits once belonging to Elvis and hundreds (if not thousands) of other items.

Jim E Curtin Auction Catalog

Back in 2006, Jim sold much of his collection at auction. Here is some information on the items included in that auction. “This is the personal collection of Jim ‘E’ Curtin III, a lifelong Elvis fan — but, not just any fan. Mr. Curtin has been the foremost Elvis impersonator for many years performing live before thousands nationwide. Additionally, he has authored numerous books on The King, and recorded several music CD’s — all the while amassing personal items related to this 20th Century pop culture icon — a phenomenal accomplishment for someone who genuinely idolized the legend.
Mr. Curtin’s collection is extraordinary for its content and rarity, as well as its massive quantity. There are thousands of original SUN and RCA record albums (both American and foreign labels, some autographed by Elvis) over 100 promotional records, an extensive sheet music collection, thousands of magazines, thousands of postcards and advertising posters, and hundreds of pieces of Elvis memorabilia produced by Elvis Presley Enterprises.
From Elvis’ concerts, there are original ticket stubs, programs, backstage passes, worn scarves, guitar picks, belts, buckles — highlighted by three stage-worn jumpsuits and costumes. These elaborately, designed suits are well documented and coveted by the most avid collectors. One such suit is the nail- mirrored, white jumpsuit Elvis wore in concert at the Houston Astrodome on March 3, 1974 before a record-setting 88,000 fans. This suit was personally presented to Jim Curtin on March 31, 1975 by Elvis backstage in Las Vegas.”

MEMPHIS, TN – (WMC-TV) – The next time you go outside near downtown Memphis, be sure to wear plenty of mosquito repellent.

The Shelby County Health Department is urging caution after mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus were recently discovered near downtown Memphis.

“It is a disease which can cause infection in the brain, and that is very serious,” said Dr. Daniel Sprenger, manager of the Shelby County Health Department’s Vector Control program.

According to Sprenger, mosquitoes with the virus have been found at a home in the 38126 zip code.

“It appears to be a typical outbreak at this point,” he said. “It doesn’t seem to have any unique characteristics.”

Since April, Vector Control has been spraying areas in the 38126 zip code, applying insecticides where mosquito breeding has occurred – especially near standing bodies of water.

“I don’t believe the flood has anything to do with it,” Sprenger said. “Actually this activity is a few weeks later than any activity we’ve seen in the past.”

So far no residents have been bitten by the infected mosquitoes.

“There’s no human cases as of yet,” Sprenger said. “Human cases, if they occur, generally occur in August or September.”

However, people who live in the affected areas are being urged to remain on guard.

“They should check their yard, and make sure there are no objects that are holding water,” Sprenger said.

BIM: Traveling to Memphis this summer for Elvis Week? Be sure to pick up some insect repellent like OFF or some people use Avon’s Skin So Soft. You will definately need this if attending the candle light service. Don’t risk getting eaten alive this summer!

Again, please keep Cowboy and his family in your thoughts and prayers. They are still in shock but very grateful no one was hurt. Jack’s daughter Alison says , ” We will rebuild the house that Jack built!” Here’s a recent photo of “happier times” when Cowboy was performing here in NYC two months to the day of the fire. Great smiles….great memories….and we wish much more of that for Cowboy and Aileen!

We love you Cowboy!

A burgundy silk long-sleeve button front shirt customized with black silk armband on right arm, triple seven metal charms sewn onto epaulets, and eagle over unicorn crest buttons, buttons at cuffs now absent. The shirt was worn by Michael Jackson during his 1995 television interview with then wife Lisa Marie Presley and Diane Sawyer. Sold for 16,000 (without buyer’s premium)

Michael Jackson’s THRILLER jacket just sold for 1.8 Million US Dollars (including buyer’s premium). A man named Milton Verret from Texas bought it. He also owns Michael Jackson’s BAD jacket. He intends to bring the jacket to various children’s hospitals across the United States to inspire the children. It will first be displayed at Dell’s Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas. This Music Icons auction took place this weekend through Julien’s Auctions – THE very best Auction house!
Some proceeds from the sale of this jacket will benefit The Shambala Preserve. It is at The Shambala Preserve that Jackson’s two Bengal tigers, Thriller and Sabu, have been living since 2006 when Jackson left Neverland Ranch. Shambala translates to “a meeting place of peace and harmony for all beings, animal and human.”
The Shambala Preserve is under the financial arm of The Roar Foundation, Founded by Tippi Hedren in 1983. It is a sanctuary that has been rescuing big cats since 1972. The Exotic Felines rescued by the Roar Foundation have been born in the U. S. to be sold as pets, and/or for financial gain.
All of the animals at Shambala are given the best care by the animal crew. Their diet was developed by a zoological veterinarian who provides a uniform health among the different species at Shambala. Shambala employs four veterinarians trained in the exotic animal field who take care of the animals.
Thriller and Sabu enjoy their new habitat on the Shambala Lake. The animals have great fun running around, chasing each other, jumping on their high rise den, and splashing in the lake. Thriller is a very complicated lady, choosey in her likes and dislikes on every level. Sabu is a bit more laid back. Both of them are content, relaxed and well protected, in their safe haven. They can be visited at The Shambala Preserve 45 miles outside the city of Los Angeles, 6867 Soledad Canyon Road, Acton, California 93510. For more information please visit http://www.shambala.org
