Steve Barile presents Imelda May with his co-authored book ” Elvis – Something For Everybody”.
Katz Deli, NYC 7-27-11.

Few singers, if any, have earned the esteemed privilege of mention along side of the truly unique versatility and individuality of the exalted one……Elvis! Some have occasionally sparked thoughts of comparison to my mind but invariably fall short.

Upon viewing a recently released dvd, I made the discovery of the latest singer to fall victim to my comparison to The King. Miss Imelda May.

The opportunity to experience her live act presented itself in the way of a concert in New York City’s Central Park on Thursday past. Briefly stated, her performance was nothing short of remarkable! As the alabaster tigress eagerly saunters on stage to the hard-driving strains of good ole rock and roll, one becomes immediately transfixed. Wearing a skin-tight Batman dress (!), six inch heals and sporting a hairdo and make-up that’s an extremely becoming combination of a retro and futuristic look, the Dublin native opens her throat. The opening hard rocker called “Pulled the Rug” was penned by Imelda, as is most of her material and is the high-energy opener of her newly released cd entitled “Mayhem.”

The precise synchronization of her band lead by accomplished guitarist Darrel Higham (Imelda’s husband), chugs along like a runaway freight train. Drummer Steve Rushton seems to be having a party of his own and is only slightly overshadowed by the intensity of upright bassist Al Gare. Rounding out Imelda’s sound is trumpeter Dave Priseman who provides the unique fusion of jazz to the set. At the close of her next selection, the steamy “Love Tattoo” from the album of the same name, Imelda greets the crowd with a delightful and charming brogue which makes even her speaking voice sound melodic. She then immerses herself in a Howlin’ Wolf cover called “Poor Boy.” Her blues delivery is as authentic as it gets, and her commitment to this piece raises the neck hairs.

Next is Johnny Burnette’s rockabilly classic “Train Kept a Rollin.” Proceeding to rock her way through much of the “Mayhem” record, she then slows up to briefly explain the autobiographical” Kentish Town Waltz” which demonstrates her musical versatility and exemplifies the beauty in her voice and ability as a composer. The set moves on to include a calypso sounding “Big Bad Handsome Man,” the pop sounds of “Tainted Love” and an inclusion of her own gospel composition “Proud and Humble” which is again reminiscent of Elvis. So with the musical dexterity of Presley, she genuinely delivers rock and roll, blues, ballads, rockabilly and gospel. We also have YouTube evidence of Imelda’s feel for country music (“Walkin’ After Midnight.”)

Check her out and be warned. You will fall in Love.

Elvis Presley Enterprises & Graceland is getting into the restaurant business overseas. The rights have been given for Elvis Presley themed restaurants in eastern and central Europe.
“Elvis American Diner” is a concept eatery featuring an upscale food court along with decor inspired by the King.
Two “Elvis American Diner” test restaurants are currently in operation in Eastern European country Georgia.  The company opening the restaurants says post communist countries missed the Elvis phenomenon and want the American experience.

EAD in Israel

Established in 1974 by Mr Uri Yoeli, the visionaire. Located on main highway between Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv; Originally designated mainly for tourism, however, the popularity of the place attracts local citizens as well; Considered as the “shrine of Elvis” in Israel, a must stop for all of Elvis’ fans;
Very frequent stop for US Navy and Army soldiers deployed in Israel.

EAD in Georgia

Established in 2009. The flag restaurant is located in the national Philharmonic building near the main avenue of Tbilisi; 3 food stations in Georgia’s new amusement park “Mtatsminda Park”;
Next restaurant to be opened in 2011 in new shopping mall “Up Town Tbilisi”;
“Elvis American Diner” is in the process of designing the “Elvis City” drive-through restaurant;
Due to the popularity of EAD, local media has taken an increased interest in Elvis’ work on TV, radio and the internet.

Diners throughout Europe will soon be chowing down in restaurants with décor inspired by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Memphis-based Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. has licensed the EAD International Group to open Elvis-themed restaurants throughout Eastern and Central Europe.

EAD International is based in Cyprus, with additional offices in Tbilisi, Georgia. The restaurant management company wants to expand worldwide and to develop its franchising network.

Countries like Greece, Turkey, Russia and others have been targeted for the opening and expansion of the “Elvis American Diner,” a restaurant concept that will feature an upscale food court with décor inspired by Elvis.

Two such restaurants are already open in the Eastern European country of Georgia – one in the National Philharmonic Building on Tbilisi’s main avenue and the second in Tbilisi’s new amusement park.

A third is slated for a shopping mall in that city.

Each restaurant within the EAD International Group will serve premium burgers, deli sandwiches, New York pizza, hand-scooped ice cream and other specialty menu items. There will be a counter where customers can watch most food get prepared.

The new concept speaks to the international flavor Elvis’ success engendered.

“We’ve seen his popularity continue to grow, especially in recent years,” said EPE president and CEO Jack Soden. “We believe this is partially because of the increase in exposure by an international audience to Elvis’ music and movies through social networking and the Internet.”

Among recent examples of Elvis’ international appeal:

– He recently was declared a posthumous honorary citizen of Budapest, Hungary, and a city park was named after him by Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos.

– His hit “A Little Less Conversation” was licensed for a TV commercial promoting a Japanese brand of canned coffee.

– 50,000 Elvis fans gathered in Hyde Park in London in late 2010 for an Elvis tribute concert hosted by Priscilla Presley and BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans.

– Edison Pena, one of the group of trapped miners in San Jose, Chile, visited Graceland for an Elvis Presley Birthday Celebration in January.

LISA MARIE PRESLEY – rocked by a heart-numbing emotional meltdown – turned to Scientology pal JOHN TRAVOLTA to  help get her life back on track.

The 43-year-old daughter of Elvis Presley buckled under the pressure of trying to revive her music career while risking her health to lose weight plus the stress of raising her 2-year-old twin girls Finley and Harper, insiders say.

“All of Lisa Marie’s problems came to a head in a perfect storm of stress – from readying her new CD to her never-ending battle to stay thin and the constant demands of the twins,” a family friend told The ENQUIRER.

“After Elvis’ death, she’d vowed to make her daddy proud of her as a performer. But her musical efforts have fallen short.”

About two weeks ago, she crumpled emotionally over her music comeback, said the source.

“I think Lisa Marie probably knows this album with producer T Bone Burnett is really her last chance for a showbiz hit,” the friend confided.

“It’s been six years since her last record, and this one is a do-or-die project.”

Elvis’ little girl is also concerned over her recent weight gain, said the source.

As The ENQUIRER reported early this year, Lisa Marie dieted from 165 lbs. down to 110, shedding 55 lbs. in just five months. She’s regained 20 pounds since then but has been drinking protein smoothies and avoiding sugar, trans fats and white bread in a bid to slim down again, said the source.

“Lisa Marie fluctuates between trying to live healthy and then going back to eating and drinking almost whatever she wants,” said the source. “She could be getting caught up in a nightmare cycle of yo-yo dieting that would be dangerous to her health.”

With her life spinning out of control, she turned to Travolta for support, said the source.

“John’s been a father figure to Lisa Marie for years,” explained the friend.

“Not only are they both Scientologists, but he’s well-versed in showbiz pressures. No one knows more about comebacks than he does, and John gave her the courage to go on.”

Travolta also allowed stressed-out Lisa Marie and hubby Michael Lockwood, her musical director, to take a break from their current home base near London, England, and offered them the use of his Bahamas vacation condo.

“They packed up the twins and headed off to the Bahamas,” said the friend. “Lisa Marie found it incredibly calming.”

“Lisa Marie had hit rock bottom – thank God John saved her,” added the source.
